Personal branding photography for your wellness business: why authentic images matter
How yoga teachers can use branding photography to grow their business
When was the last time you updated your photos for your wellness business?
For many yoga teachers, your images are the very first impression your students see — on your website, your socials, or even your flyers. And in a world where authenticity matters more than ever, the photos you share should reflect you — your energy, your style, and your story.
Recently, I had the joy of capturing a personal branding photography session with local yoga teacher Sarah from Shanti Studio in Woodend, Victoria. It was the perfect reminder of why branding photos are such a powerful part of building a wellness business.
A story of perfectly imperfect Sarah, told through yoga flow in the studio.
Sarah opted for a full brand experience, and she wanted her images to feel true to herself, which she described as perfectly imperfect. This is just the type of woman I love to work with, it fits with my 'You are enough' value.
Sarah's semi private studio is filled with light and creates a really welcome space to share her various types of yoga practice with one or two people.
Sarah has a real talent in design and this shows in the space she has created. With accent lights, mats and chairs which are kind of vital for chair yoga which Sarah also teaches. There is an abundance of aids to prop, bolster, cushion and snuggle up in, there were thoughtful books, some greenery and very importantly her puppy Frankie who joins in the yoga sessions if clients are happy with this. Frankie wondered in and out, didn't disturb any of my gear and sometimes gave me 'a look', what was I doing and why wasn't I on the mat?
We started with the headshots, Sarah needed some for a few projects that she is working on.
(Plus, even if there's nothing right now, you will find it's always handy to have an updated one on hand.) These were taken in a directed way, this part is definately not a documentary approach! There were lights, there was the studio looking more like a photography studio than a yoga studio for a little while there.
After the headshots of Sarah and Frankie were done and dusted, it was straight into yoga flow, first with the chair and then the mat. Sarah even brought out the fun yoga that she does with children, a tea party, bubbles and balloons! Ahh it was a lot of fun and there was genuinely a lot of laughing.
Instead of directing or posing every frame, I worked in my unobtrusive, documentary style. I captured her moving through a flow, pausing in meditation, and simply being present in the space. Sometimes I asked her to repeat the flow but otherwise, she was in her own space, doing her own thing. All told, the images are the story of her practice in an honest, natural way.
They are her.

Yoga out and about, and yes there was coffee
We packed up the studio and headed down the road to Oak and Stone in Woodend for a take away coffee.
Here we snapped a few shots of Sarah in front of the amazing artwork designed by local artist Elise Gow in collaboration with Chalky Signs. Some people walked by chatting to Sarah while I did my thing with the camera.
Now here is a great example of how yoga instructors can use branding photography to grow their business.
Sarah offers in accomodation yoga sessions for those visiting the Macedon Ranges, so it was off on a short drive over Mt Macedon to a gorgeous local accomodation option, Cottage by the Bowser. Here we were able to show potential clients what Sarah can offer. With strong authentic visuals, it can be seen at a glance that a weekend away to refresh and recharge can include a session of hatha, chair, or restorative yoga. This type of photoshoot can work in the same way for anyone needing wellness brand photography.

Why personal branding photography matters for your wellness business.
As a yoga teacher, your brand isn’t just your logo or your studio — it’s you. Your clients come to you because of the way you teach, the energy you bring into the mat, and the connection they feel with you and your story.
That’s why personal branding photography is so valuable:
It builds trust before class even begins.
When someone visits your website or Instagram and sees authentic, natural photos of you, they instantly feel more connected.
It gives you a consistent look across all platforms. Instead of scrambling for selfies or relying on stock images, you’ll have a library of professional photos that feel like your brand.
It shows your values and personality.
Whether you want to highlight calm, strength, playfulness, or spirituality, photography can capture the essence of your teaching style.
Authentic yoga photography helps your potential clients feel like they already know you, and that your puppy knows downward dog— and that’s powerful.
When your puppy knows downward dog.
Preparing for your own personal branding session
If you’re thinking about your own branding shoot with me, we'll discuss what you need and plan how the shoot will unfold. Because this is storytelling brand photography, it's your story so you are in the driver's seat and get to choose what you want for your brand.
Here are a few tips to help you get the most from your session:
Think about the vibe you want to share. Do you want your photos to feel calm and nurturing, or energised and fun? We'll talk about this before we plan anything else as this will dictate the way we will be telling your story through images. It's this intention that will shape the way we capture your session.
You'll know what to expect on the day of your personal branding photoshoot and these simple choices will make your images feel like an extension of your you and your business, not a performance.
What you wear should feel natural and true to you.
Whether that’s soft, earthy tones or vibrant activewear, your outfit should reflect your teaching style and brand. As you will see, Sarah planned and prepared outfits that she was able to change up really quickly, giving her a variety of photos that don't look like they were all taken at the same time. That way her content feels fresh.
We'll choose a meaningful location.
Your studio, an outdoor space, or even your own home practice area can add layers of authenticity. This home studio was the obvious choice and by adding locations nearby, you can get a totally different look and show another side to your personality. Great for social media content, so that potential clients will feel they know you, plus valuable authentic photos for yoga business website.
Choose and bring props that help tell your story.
For a wellness brand, it could be a favourite mat, blocks, candles, a diary or journal can help illustrate your teaching approach. It also is helpful to have something to do with your hands!
Your Brand, Your Story
This session was such a beautiful reminder that personal branding photos aren’t about striking the perfect pose — they’re about capturing the real moments that tell your story and connect us as human beings.
For Sarah, the result was a collection of images that felt grounded, calm, and authentically her. Images she can now use across her website, social media, and marketing to connect with her clients in a meaningful way.
If you’re a wellness professional looking for more than a headshot, I’d love to chat about capturing your story. Together, we can create images that reflect who you are — in life, in practice, and in business.
